Let's take a look at the state Jesus was in when he sat down by the well. If we really understand the position of Jesus, it will tell us much about who He is. In John chapter 4, it says that Jesus sat down by the well because he was tired from travelling; "wearied" is the actual word. To me, wearied is a little more than tired. When I think of Jesus as being God and being man, I tend to discount Him being man and supposedly suffering like us. If He was fully God too then He could never understand us like Scripture states, so I surmised. I have always thought "He was never a woman, only lived thirty-three years, was God, what did He know really?"
But in Phillipians 2, Paul says that Jesus laid aside His Godness so that He could feel and know us. So when John states that He was weary then we know that Jesus was physically worn out. Why is this useful information? Because it takes us one step closer to trusting Him. If He really did give up all the benefits of being God and lived His life fully human then He does understand how I feel. He does know how it is, in whatever moment that I find myself in. I can trust Him to get it, to get me.
No wonder He had to constantly go spend time with the Father. No wonder He understood how important the Holy Spirit is to live life on this earth well. Plus, can you imagine the suffering he was under to sweat blood? I am not sure we can ever understand what all happened on the cross or what giving up his Godness for us meant for Him but the more we know of Him, the more we will know His love.
Next week... I will discuss what Jesus means when He says "the gift of God". I always thought it was salvation but it's not. It's the reason for salvation.
